Svelte Katy Perry and voluptuous Leona Lewis lead the glamour stakes at the Grammys

Singers Leona Lewis and Katy Perry may be like chalk and cheese, but they were both clear winners in the style stakes at last night's Grammy Awards.

Golden-haired singer Leona, 23, wore a floor length gown which matched her honey skin tone by designer Randi Rahm.

Studded with golden crystals, the halter necked gown clung to her womanly curves as she oozed glamour on the Grammys red carpet.

While Katy, 24, who recently split from Gym Class Heroes boyfriend Travis McCoy showed off a very slim silhouette in a sugar pink strapless pleated gown.

Golden girls: Leona Lewis emerged as a clear winner in the style stakes along with Katy Perry at the 51st Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night

Playing it safe: Brit singers Duffy and Adele opted for unadventurous black cocktail dresses - Duffy's vintage-looking number is by celebrity favourite Alberta Ferretti

However, despite her winning look, Leona was the biggest British loser of the night, walking away empty handed from her three nominations.

While winners Adele and Duffy played it safe in classic black cocktail dresses, the X Factor winner and the I Kissed A Girl singer opted for full on glamour for the prestigious event.

Katy said: 'So I did have a previous dress ready to go tonight that might have ended up `worst dressed.' But it came in the mail, because I had it custom-made of course — because I didn't want anyone wearing that dress, ever — and it wasn't right. And it was the day before the Grammys.'

Full length and fabulous: Country music stars Sheryl Cole, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift all opted for stunning floor length gowns

Her stylist found the pink frock by Lebanese designer Basil Soda.

She said: 'I gotta ship the dress back to Lebanon tomorrow. But I feel great. I'm so glad there's always a Plan B.'

Many stars were picture-perfect at the event held last night at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Both Gwyneth Paltrow and Paris Hilton opted for minidresses but Gwyneth decided to keep her well-honed limbs under wraps in a pair of frumpy grey tights on this occasion

Welsh singing sensation Duffy, who took home the award for Pop Vocal Album for her best-selling disc Rockferry, also went with a last-minute choice - an Alberta Ferretti black cocktail dress with a jewelled neckline and a sheer asymmetrical pattern at the bust.

A safe choice for the retro-influenced singer, who prefers a vintage-inspired look.

While singer Sheryl Crow looked uber-glamorous in a slinky one-shoulder electric blue gown by Toni Maticevsk, as did country singer Carrie Underwood in a gold beaded tulle slip gown from Zuhair Murad.

Young singer Taylor Swift embraced her sexier side in a plunging strappy black number by Kaufman Franco.

Made it back: Jennifer Hudson chose a white, silver and black statement dress by designer Roland Mouret for her return to the spotlight in front of the star-studded industry audience

Singer Jennifer Hudson - another winner on the night - wore a white, silver and navy colour-blocked cocktail dress by Roland Mouret for her emotional comeback in front of the star-studded industry audience.

It was an unusual choice for the singer, but showing off a slimmer silhouette, she more than
did the statement dress - with its white high neck bodice, pleated peplum around the waist, and dark navy pencil skirt - justice.

Keeping her hair simple with a side-swept ponytail, a pop of colour came from her teal blue Christian Louboutins.

Out of this world: Winner Estelle and nominee M.I.A opted for outlandish mini dresses

British singer Estelle, who took home a Grammy for her duet with Kanye West, wore one of the night's more outlandish outfits along with fellow nominee M.I.A.

But she won no points for her space-age silver get-up - complete with peep-toe boots.

While heavily pregnant M.I.A. performed her hit “Paper Planes” prancing around in a Henry Holland polka-dot mini with a sheer midriff, and looked very comfortable doing so.

In general, most performers played it safe with some observers commenting that the show lacked the free spirit that typically sets the Grammys apart from other shows during the crammed awards season.

Mini adventures: Singers Robyn, left, Solange Knowles and former Destiny's Child singer Letoya Luckett opted for shorter lengths

'It seems a lot more tame, tamer than usual,' said Kamarake. The rappers in particular toned down the flash

"They could have risked being too ostentatious in this time, rubbing it in people's faces when people are sitting around the table figuring how they're going to put dinner on the table, said Memsor Kamarake, fashion editor at US style and music magazine Vibe.

Singers Robyn, Solange Knowles and Letoya Luckett formerly of Destiny's Child opted for fashionable mini dresses to show off their legs.

Robyn also held a cute custom-made jewelled handbag in the shape of robin bird.

Miley Cyrus shrugged off the row surrounding her recent questionable 'slanty-eyed' pictures to appear at the show.

She added some youth to her mature Max Azria gown with stacked diamond bracelets by Mimi So in a mature look for the teen sensation.

Socialite and reality television star Kim Kardashian was a surprise hit on the red carpet in a sculptural mini dress which covered her most well-known asset - her bottom.
