The First Dinner Lady: While President Obama doles out cash, Michelle ladles out lunch

Her husband is doling out dollops of cash to fix the economy. She's doling out the lunch.

Michelle Obama was guest dinner lady at a Washington soup kitchen yesterday.

She swapped her designer fashions for an apron and plastic gloves to dish up portions of mushroom risotto and fruit salad.

The trip to Miriam's Kitchen, just a few blocks away from the White House, was arranged to highlight the President's push for more people to become involved in community service.

With America facing a deepening recession, Mrs Obama said demand for food kitchens is likely to grow across the country.

Despite the bleak outlook she had a ready smile for surprised diners and was happy to pose for photos.

While the First Lady was hard at work, her daughters Malia, ten, and seven-year-old Sasha were hard at play.

The girls returned home from school on Wednesday to find a playground installed in the White House garden, just a few yards from the Oval Office.

They squealed with delight when they saw the swings and slides and played for almost an hour, said a spokesman.

The £2,000 cedar and redwood set may keep them occupied for a while - but it's unlikely to make them forget their father's promise of a new puppy.
